A small-business website: help visitors understand your offer and contact you

Before adding more pages, check whether your website answers a prospect’s questions and whether contacting you actually works on a phone.

A small-business website: help visitors understand your offer and contact you

A business owner visits your website between meetings. They want to know whether you meet their need, where you operate and how to reach you. A polished page that leaves these questions unanswered asks them to do extra work.

Describe a recognisable offer

Choose one service and explain who it is for, the problem addressed and what is delivered. Prefer a concrete example to a string of adjectives. Visitors should be able to distinguish your offer from a general promise of quality.

Google recommends useful, readable content organised with descriptive headings. These principles help present information; they do not guarantee a search position or a number of enquiries.

Provide the missing context

  • The customer or need you serve.
  • Your service area and ways of working.
  • What happens during the first conversation.
  • An easy-to-find contact method.

If you describe a completed project, state only what you can support. A generic photograph should not be presented as a real project you delivered. Published evidence should match the offer.

Check the whole journey

Try this exercise: someone discovers a service page on their phone and wants to ask a question. Can they read without zooming, find the contact option and send a message? Is the confirmation understandable? Does the recipient actually receive the enquiry?

Tell the team before sending a clearly labelled test. Also record who answers enquiries and what happens when that person is away.

Observe before rebuilding everything

Ask two people unfamiliar with your business to describe the offer after reading it. Listen to their remaining questions. They may reveal missing information that matters more than a decorative detail.

Then track received enquiries and their relevance alongside visits. The initial goal is an understandable, usable journey; commercial progress is measured over time.

To discuss your website, tell us about your business and the action you want to make easier. This starting point helps define the pages you actually need.
